Dermal fillers are products which are injected into the layers beneath the skin surface to diminish or remove lines, wrinkles, and folds, to restore lost volume and facial contours, or to enhance facial features such as lips, cheeks, and chins. The result is a healthy, vital, natural look with smoother and younger looking skin.

These products can be used to:

• Erase or diminish fine lines, wrinkles, folds, or creases
• Replace the inevitable volume loss that occurs in the face with aging
• General contouring of the face such as cheek and chin augmentation or balancing asymmetries
• Lip rejuvenation to redefine the lip borders, the Cupid ’s bow, perk up droopy mouth corners, and restore lip architecture
• Lip enhancement to add volume and plump the lips

Dermal Filler Results

Injectable dermal fillers are typically immediate and often a single treatment session will achieve the desired improvement. At EMBODY Medical Spa we are able to utilize this full array of products and tailor your treatment to your specific needs to achieve an optimal result.

Some of these products are injected quite superficially to erase fine lines and wrinkles while others are meant to be injected into the deeper layers for correction of folds, creases, deep wrinkles, and volume loss. The products vary in duration of effect. They have all been well studied and have an excellent safety record. Dr. Mayo will help you to determine which product will best achieve the result you desire.

The Dermal Filler Treatment Process:

Step 1:
Prior to your procedure it important to discontinue medications that can increase bleeding such as aspirin, Gingko, vitamin E/Fish oil, St. John’s Wart, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (Advil™, Aleve™, …). This should be done at least 7 days prior to your treatment to minimize any bruising at the injection site. If you are on a blood thinner for medical reasons consult your physician prior to discontinuing it. Eating pineapple can help decrease the risk of bruising (it contains Bromelain - which is also available in health food stores) as can Arnica tablets or cream used pre or post injections. If you have a history of recurrent facial cold sores, a pre and post treatment dose of an antiviral medication (such as Valtrex) may be prescribed. First time clients will need to provide a full medical history, including allergies.

Step 2:
Anesthesia is not required for the injection of dermal fillers, however, Dr. Mayo will discuss topical and/or local injections of anesthetic to numb the injection sites and increase your level of comfort.

We will then proceed with your treatment plan and inject the dermal filler under the skin or into the lips. After the injection has been completed, Dr. Mayo will massage the treated area to ensure perfect distribution of the product. An ice pack will be applied to the area to help prevent any swelling and you will be able to leave shortly after the injections are completed.

What to expect following your dermal filler injections?

Typically after injections of dermal fillers, clients can resume normal activities with no down time. You may experience some redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, itching, or bruising at the injection site. These are generally mild to moderate and typically resolve within a few days to a week. You can minimize these possible side effects by avoiding vigorous exercise, excess heat/sun or cold exposure, or pressure on the treated area for ~12 hours following your treatment. Excess alcohol consumption should be avoided for 12 hours pre and post-treatment. Acetaminophen/Tylenol can be used if you have any discomfort.

How long will the results last?

This varies from person to person. In general, Restylane®, and Perlane® last ~6 months, and Juvederm Ultra™, Juvederm Ultra Plus™ and Radiesse® ~1 year. However, some of these products may also stimulate new collagen formation resulting in long lasting benefits. Furthermore, results are typically prolonged when combined with Botox®. These products provide a very natural looking appearance. The contours of our face continually change with time. Thus, a permanent change (such as surgery) now may not blend with our overall appearance later in life. Furthermore, the volume loss that occurs with aging is responsible for the majority of the change in our facial contours. Pulling the skin up will drastically decrease wrinkles but it will not correct volume loss or restore contours. Surgery is a very obvious alteration and requires a lengthy recovery time, whereas corrections with dermal fillers can be achieved very subtly with no downtime.
